ChatGPT is already sending traffic to websites and yours might be one of them. You can find out in about 30 seconds using Google Analytics. You don’t need paid software, just a free report that’s been sitting in your dashboard this whole time while you weren’t looking.
Let’s go find it.
Wait… ChatGPT Actually Sends People To Your Website?
Yep. And it’s growing. Fast.
Here’s what’s happening. Someone asks ChatGPT something like “who does roof repair in Tulsa” or “best HVAC company near me.” ChatGPT doesn’t just wing it, it pulls from real websites, pages, and businesses.
And when it cites your page as a source, people click. That click shows up in your Google Analytics as referral traffic from chatgpt.com.
The problem is, most business owners have absolutely no idea this is happening. They’re staring at their organic traffic numbers wondering why things feel different — meanwhile ChatGPT is quietly sending them visitors they’ve never even noticed.
Don’t be that business owner. Let’s check.
How To Check If ChatGPT Is Sending You Traffic
30 seconds. That’s all this takes.
- Open Google Analytics
- Click Reports in the left sidebar
- Click Acquisition, then Traffic Acquisition
- Click the dropdown arrow on the first column
- Change it to Session source / medium
- Type “chatgpt.com” in the search bar
If you see traffic here — congratulations! ChatGPT is already recommending you to real people asking real questions. Go swim in a pile of money. Or at least feel good about yourself for a minute.
If you don’t see anything? Don’t stress. That just means you have an opportunity your competitors haven’t touched yet. And honestly, that’s almost better.

Ok Cool, But WHICH Pages Is ChatGPT Citing?
Knowing you’re getting AI traffic is great. But knowing which pages ChatGPT is recommending? That’s where the real sauce is.
Here’s how to find out:
- Stay in Google Analytics
- Click Engagement in the sidebar
- Then click Pages and Screens
- Add a filter at the top
- Set it to Session source → Contains → “chatgpt”
Now you’re looking at every single page on your site that ChatGPT has sent visitors to.
These aren’t random pages. These are the pages AI looked at and said “yeah, this one’s worth recommending.” That’s a big deal. Don’t just glance at this list and move on — these pages are telling you exactly what AI thinks is valuable about your website.
Go deeper with them.
If ChatGPT IS Recommending You, Do This
AI already picked these pages. Your job is to make them so good that it keeps picking them. Here’s how:
- Add more depth. More sections. More questions answered. If the page covers 5 things, make it cover 10. Be the most comprehensive version of that page on the internet.
- Add original data. Stats from your own business. Customer survey results. Real numbers only you can claim. AI eats this stuff up because it makes its answers more credible. We mention that we’ve helped over 130 businesses rank #1 on Google — because it’s true, and because AI likes citing real proof.
- Keep it fresh. Update the content regularly. AI doesn’t want to cite a page from 2019 when there’s a better one from last month. Stay current or get replaced.
- Build internal links to these pages. Link from your blog posts and other pages to push more authority toward the ones AI already likes. Think of internal links as votes. The more votes a page gets, the stronger it becomes.
AI already chose your pages once. Give it every reason to choose them again.
If ChatGPT Is NOT Recommending You… Fix That
If nothing showed up in your report, hold on before you panic. This trick only catches people who actually clicked through. ChatGPT can be recommending you all day long and if nobody clicks the link, your Analytics shows nothing. Zero traffic doesn’t mean zero mentions.
So before you rebuild your content strategy, go check if AI is recommending your business with our free tool. It runs the actual questions your customers ask into ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity and shows you who’s getting named. If you’re in there, great, you just have a click problem. If you’re not, then yeah, you need content AI actually wants to reference. Here’s what works right now.
Answer Real Questions People Are Actually Asking
Go to AnswerThePublic or AnswerSocrates. Type in your main service. You’ll get a list of every question people search about that topic.
Each one of those questions is a blog post or FAQ section waiting to happen. Stop guessing what to write about and let the data tell you.
Answer The Question In The First Sentence
AI scans pages looking for direct answers. If your answer is hiding behind three paragraphs of fluff and a life story about how you got into the roofing business… AI’s already gone. It found someone who gets to the point.
Answer first. Expand later. Every time.
Structure Your Content Like A Human Would Read It
Short paragraphs. Bullet points. Clear headings. AI needs to scan your page quickly and grab the relevant piece.
If your page is one giant wall of text, AI skips it — even if the answer is buried in there somewhere. Think about how YOU read a page when you’re in a hurry. That’s exactly how AI reads every page.
Add Insights Only You Can Provide
If your page says the same thing as 50 other websites… why would AI pick yours?
It wouldn’t.
But if you add your own experience, your own take, your own reasoning based on actually doing this work — now your page is different from everything else. AI prioritizes sources that bring something new to the conversation. Be the source, not the echo.
Add Original Data About Your Business
This is one of the easiest wins and almost nobody does it.
Things like “we’ve served over 1,000 homeowners in Tulsa since 1990” or results from your own customer surveys. AI loves citing specific numbers from real sources because it makes its answers more credible.
And your competitors literally cannot copy your data. It’s yours. Use it.
Your Google Business Profile Matters Here Too
This is the part most people miss completely.
Google’s AI Overviews pull from your Google Business Profile for local searches. If someone asks “best plumber in Tulsa” and your profile is fully loaded with services, descriptions, reviews, and posts — you have a way better shot at being the answer.
Your profile isn’t just for Maps anymore. AI is reading it too.
And with the new Ask Maps feature rolling out, your profile just became even more important. But that’s a whole other conversation.
