Infographic answering whether social media helps your Google rankings, showing that social builds branded search, with 95% of clicks coming from branded queries and a branded vs non-branded position comparison.

Does Social Media Help Your Google Rankings?

Quick Answer: Not directly. Social media is not a Google ranking factor, and Google has said so for years. But we compared our fastest-ranking clients to our slowest, and the ones who already had a social presence before hiring us ranked faster. Even the ones with a few hundred followers. Here is 16 months of our own data on why.

Does social media help your Google rankings? Not directly, and anyone selling you on “social signals” is repeating something Google has flatly denied. Posting every day will not push your service pages up the results.

But we noticed something across our own client base that changed how we think about it, and we have 16 months of our own Search Console data behind it. Every other article on this question is borrowing stats from Semrush and HubSpot. We are going to show you ours.

Is Social Media a Google Ranking Factor?

No. Social media is not a direct Google ranking factor. Your follower count, likes, and shares are not inputs into the algorithm. Google has confirmed this over and over.

Watch out for the articles that say “social signals build your authority” in one paragraph and then admit Google denies it two paragraphs later. That happens constantly on this topic, and it should tell you how much thought went into the rest of the page.

Here is the thing though. “Is it a ranking factor” is the wrong question. It is a yes or no that misses what is actually happening.

What We Noticed Across Our Clients

We went back through our client base and compared the businesses that got results fastest against the ones that took the longest. We were looking for what the fast ones had in common.

One thing correlated: the fastest clients already had a social media presence before they signed up with us. Not big accounts. Some of them had a few hundred followers. What they had in common was that they had been consistent.

The surprising part is that even those small accounts generated branded search. A few hundred followers was enough for people to start Googling the business by name. That is not what we expected to find.

Being straight with you: that is a correlation, not proof. A business that stays consistent on social is probably a business that is well run in general, answers our emails, and gets us what we need. That matters too. But the pattern was clear enough that we stopped treating social as unrelated to search.

Our Own Numbers: We 7.5x’d Our Traffic in a Month

Here is what happened to our search traffic in the last 28 days. We pulled 2,834 clicks. The 28 days before that, we pulled 380. That is 7.5 times more traffic in a month.

We did not start ranking for a single new competitive keyword to do it. We were promoting our free AI visibility checker on social, and instead of sending people a link, we told them to go Google it.

Our monthly clicks tell the story better than we can:

  • August 2025: 51 clicks
  • January 2026: 82 clicks
  • March 2026: 50 clicks
  • April 2026: 572 clicks
  • June 2026: 868 clicks
  • July 2026: 2,099 clicks, and that is only through the 12th

Flat for six months. Then it takes off and never comes back down. Nearly two thirds of every click our site has earned in 16 months happened in the last 28 days.

95% of Our Clicks Are Branded

Now here is why that jump happened. Looking at 16 months of query data, 3,023 of our 3,177 clicks came from branded searches. Someone typed a version of our name. That is 95%.

The gap in how those clicks got earned is the real story:

  • Branded searches: 16,118 impressions produced 3,023 clicks. An 18.8% click-through rate.
  • Non-branded searches: 34,075 impressions produced 154 clicks. A 0.45% click-through rate.

Non-branded got us more than twice the impressions and 20 times fewer clicks. When someone searches your name, they click. When they search a category, they window shop.

The Comparison That Proves It

These are two rows from the same report, pointing at the same page on our site.

  • “gobig ai visibility checker” sits at position 1.1 with 1,560 clicks.
  • “ai visibility checker” sits at position 27.7 with 4 clicks off over a thousand impressions.

Same page. Same domain. Same authority. One is the top of page one. The other is page three.

The difference is that we made the first search exist. Thousands of people went and Googled our free AI visibility checker by name because we asked them to. Google did not hand us that search. We built it, and because our name is in it, nobody can take it.

Now look at what social did not do. That same page is still at 27.7 for the non-branded term. Social did not lift it one inch. That is the honest limit, and it is exactly why “social boosts your rankings” is the wrong way to think about this.

And the branded traffic converts like crazy. Way more than we expected. Tons of calls and clients out of it. Those are people who already decided to look at us specifically before they ever hit the site.

For us, Facebook is the biggest driver right now in July 2026. That surprised us.

The order changed over time. It started with TikTok. Then Instagram took over by a landslide and has been our most reliable platform since. YouTube has been steady but never explosive. Then Facebook took off and went absolutely crazy for us.

Our theory on Facebook, and it is just our theory: Facebook people are more skeptical up front, but they are far more willing to actually take action. Younger audiences are desensitized to this stuff. They have seen a thousand people tell them to go Google something. Facebook users still do it.

Our Honest Take on Why Social Helps

Here is our opinion, and we want to be clear that it is an opinion, not something Google has confirmed.

We think social matters now because it proves you are real. Google is trying to figure out whether you are a legitimate player, and it is looking at everything. A blog post can be faked in an afternoon. An audience cannot. There is nothing like a real following to show you are at least somewhat liked and somewhat of an authority in your space.

Will a big following rank you #1 overnight? No. Not close. But our clients with real audiences that generate branded search have an easier time ranking and pull more traffic and more business because of it. We see it enough that we cannot imagine it does not help.

Take that for what it is. Our observation across our own clients, not a Google statement.

Google Just Made This Measurable

On July 7, 2026, Google added a new Search Console property type called platform properties. You can verify your Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube account and see how your posts perform in Google Search and Discover, including which search terms lead people to them.

That is a big deal because this connection has been invisible until now. You could feel it working and never prove it.

Two honest notes. It is rolling out gradually and we do not have it yet. And it is measurement only. It does not index your site or change your rankings no matter how it gets spun. It is the same kind of window Google opened when it started showing your Google Business Profile data in Analytics.

The Bottom Line

Social media does not help your Google rankings directly. It builds branded search, and branded search is worth more than a ranking bump. You cannot lose it, nobody can outrank you for your own name, and the people using it already decided they want you.

So stop asking whether posting moves you up the SERP. Ask whether anyone knows your name well enough to type it into Google. That is the question with money behind it. And if you are not sure Google even has your site yet, start with whether your website is on Google at all.
