How to change your Google Business Profile address without losing rankings, showing an old address updated to a new one on the existing profile

How to Change Your Google Business Address Without Losing Your Rankings

Quick Answer: When you change your Google Business address, your local rankings can dip for a few weeks while Google figures out where you moved. You keep that dip small by updating your website, social profiles, and citations before you ever touch the address inside your profile. Move it once, verify fast, and never create a second Google Business Profile to do it.

The smartest way to change your Google Business address is to update everything else online first, then change the profile last. We have moved at least five client locations this year alone, and the ones who prep this way barely feel it. The ones who flip the address with nothing else lined up are the ones who watch their map rankings fall off a cliff.

Here is the version nobody sugarcoats. We moved a bail bonds client from Tulsa out to Broken Arrow, and their money keywords, “tulsa bail bonds” and “bail bonds tulsa,” tanked. Those were the words paying the bills. This guide is the process we run when a client moves, plus the drops and recoveries we have watched happen. GoBIG Systems has helped over 130 businesses rank #1 on Google, and our founder Steven has been doing local SEO since 2009, so this is not theory.

Will Changing Your Google Business Address Hurt Your Rankings?

Changing your Google Business address can cause a temporary ranking drop, and how big it is depends heavily on where you are moving. Google leans on your location to decide who shows up in the map pack. When you move, that signal changes, and Google needs time to recalculate where you belong.

Here is what it looked like for us. We moved Signature Bail Bonds from Tulsa to Broken Arrow, a smaller suburb. They were sitting at #1 in the Tulsa map pack. Their main money terms dropped hard, and that stung because those were the keywords making the money.

So we went to work. They were already on Yext, so we fixed those citations without creating duplicates. We also went into BrightLocal and built manual citations at around three dollars each. Recovery started about a month in. Over time we got most of it back, including hard-fought synonyms like “24 hour bondsman.” Tulsa itself has stayed permanently harder, though. A few of the downtown-specific terms they used to own never fully came back. When you move out of a market, you can win most of it back, and not always all of it.

Most moves are less dramatic than people expect. If the move is short, or the business was not already dominating its market, the dip is usually unnoticeable. The businesses that feel it are the ones sitting at #1 in a competitive market, because they have the most to lose.

Now the flip side. We moved a roofing company about 20 miles north into a bigger city, and they ranked in roughly three to four weeks. You still have to do the SEO fundamentals right, but you pop up in more prominent areas because Google Maps is built to give people directions, so a bigger, busier market can work in your favor fast. If you are stuck in the wrong market, a move can be the best thing you do, even when you are heading somewhere more crowded.

How Do You Change Your Google Business Address the Right Way?

The right way to change your Google Business address is to update everything in your control before you change the profile. Think of it like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs so Google can confirm you moved instead of having to guess.

Run them in this order:

  1. Update your website first. Change the address in your footer, your contact page, and anywhere else it lives. Your site is one of the first places Google checks, so make sure your website is indexed on Google and showing the new address.
  2. Update your social profiles. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, anywhere your old address is listed. These are signals too.
  3. Update your citations. Directory listings like Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and the BBB. If you are on a platform like Yext, edit the existing listings instead of making new ones.
  4. Change the profile last. Only after everything else points to the new address. Then verify as fast as Google lets you.

You Will Have to Reverify Your Google Business Profile

Plan on it. Reverification used to be roughly a coin flip. This year it has been every single time. Not one client of ours has changed an address without Google asking them to verify again.

Approval usually takes a few days once you submit. Getting to submit is where people get stuck. We are working with a business right now that cannot even start the verification and has to go through support to do it. Budget time for it and start the moment you flip the address.

The One Mistake That Wrecks a Google Business Address Change

Do not create a new Google Business Profile when you move. This is the worst mistake we see, and people do it constantly because they think a new address needs a new profile. It does not.

Your existing profile holds years of history, reviews, and trust. That history is a huge part of why you rank. Start a brand new profile and you throw all of it away, then you are building from zero in your new market with none of the authority you spent years earning. Always edit the profile you have. Never start over.

The other common mistake is simpler. People change the address inside Google and forget to update it anywhere else. Their website still says the old city. Their Facebook says the old city. Now Google sees conflicting information and has no idea which address to trust, so the dip lasts way longer than it should.

Skipping the prep work can also get your profile suspended, not just dinged. We have seen it happen when a client changed the address in Google while their website, Facebook, and citations still showed the old one. We have always gotten those profiles back, but the appeal process is tedious and it is nerve-racking every time. Update everything else first and you avoid the whole thing.

What Happens to Your Google Reviews When You Move?

Your reviews carry over when you change your address. This is the thing owners worry about most, and the answer is simple. You are moving an address, that is normal, and as long as you are not doing anything sketchy, your reviews and history come with you.

We get it, it feels risky. But businesses move all the time. You are not going to lose your review history or your reputation because you updated your location. The only way you lose that history is if you make the mistake above and start a new profile. Keep your profile, keep your reviews.

What Happens to Your Rankings in the Market You Left?

Most of the time, the history built into your pages, reviews, and content helps you stay somewhat prominent in the old area even after you move. It is rare that someone moves away from a market they cared about ranking in, but when they do, that earned authority does not vanish overnight.

Here is how we think about it with our own business. We rank in Broken Arrow right now, but Tulsa would be the bigger prize. If we wanted Tulsa, we would move there and point our whole site at it. And if we won Tulsa, the odds we would suddenly lose Broken Arrow are low. Even if we gave up a little ground in Broken Arrow, the trade would be worth it. Moving toward a better market is usually worth more than clinging to the one you are in.

Does a Short Move Across Town Affect Your Google Rankings?

A short move across town does almost nothing to your rankings, as long as you update your directory listings. If you are moving a couple miles within the same city, NAP consistency is the only thing you need to worry about. Fix your name, address, and phone number everywhere and you are fine.

A long-distance move is a different animal, because you are competing in a brand new city against businesses that have been there for years. That is when the full process above matters, and when the dip shows up. Distance is the deciding factor. Same city is a formality. New city is a campaign.

How to Change Your Home Address on Google Maps

To change your home address on Google Maps, open the app, tap Saved, then Labeled, then tap the three dots next to Home and choose Edit home. Clear the old address, type the new one, and save. That covers the personal Home label used for directions.

If you run your business out of your house, that is a different job and it matters a lot more. Updating the Home label in your Maps app does nothing to your Google Business Profile. Those are two separate things, and only one of them affects whether customers find you.

Moving a Home-Based Business on Google

The process is the same as any business move. Update your website, socials, and citations first, then change the profile, then reverify. Two things are different, and both work against you.

Getting approved is harder. Google is stricter with home-based profiles, and reverification takes more effort than it does for a commercial address. Expect more friction.

You get rewarded less. A hidden address hurts your chances in the map pack. Home-based businesses with the address hidden usually sit at the bottom, no matter how well everything else is dialed in.

Our advice to every home-based client is the same. Get a business address as soon as you can afford one. It does not need to be impressive. A small suite that someone could technically walk into is enough. Put your signage up, run it as a location, and you are in a completely different position with Google. It is worth the rent.

How Duplicate Listings Hurt Your Google Business Profile

Duplicate listings are the hidden headache of an address change. They are a pain mostly because they are hard to find and even harder to remove. We have had dozens of clients dealing with them.

One company we helped in Los Angeles had five duplicates across different directories, plus duplicate Facebook pages on top of that. It was scattered everywhere and it was holding him back. That cleanup took over six months, and the only reason was access. We could not get logins from him for the various directories. With proper access it is closer to a month of work. Either way it is ongoing, because you will always turn up one more.

This is why you edit your existing listings when you move instead of creating new ones. Every new listing you spin up is a future duplicate waiting to confuse Google.

The Bottom Line on Changing Your Google Business Address

Changing your Google Business address will probably cause a short dip, and that is normal. Update your website, socials, and citations first, change the profile last, never start a new profile, and keep your NAP consistent everywhere. Do it that way and most businesses barely feel it. Rush it and you will be digging out for months.

One caution on timelines. Most recoveries happen within weeks to a few months. But we have watched a business take three years to get back what it had, and some terms never return at all. That is the tail risk, and it is why the prep work matters.

Remember the bigger picture too. A move can be a downgrade or an upgrade depending on the market. Sometimes the best SEO decision a business makes is moving toward a market worth winning.
