How to Check If AI Is Recommending Your Business

To check if AI is recommending your business, ask the AI tools your customers use and watch where your traffic is coming from. The fastest way is to run the free checker at the top of this page, but you can also do it by hand. Here are the ways that actually work.

  • Ask the AI directly. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and type what your customers actually ask, like “best [your service] in [your city].” If a competitor gets named and you don’t, there is your answer.
  • See which pages AI is citing (our favorite trick). In Google Analytics, go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Switch to Session source / medium, type chatgpt.com, then open Engagement, then Pages and screens and filter by that source. Those are the exact pages AI is pulling from to answer people, so double down on them.
  • Check the AI Assistant channel in GA4. Google added an “AI Assistant” channel in 2026. In that same Traffic acquisition report, look for the AI Assistant row to see visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. It counts clicks only, not every mention, and misses Perplexity, so treat it as a floor.
  • Check the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. Verify your site (fastest way is importing it from Google Search Console, no re-verifying), then click AI Performance in the left menu. It shows how often Microsoft Copilot cites your pages and the grounding queries it used to find you. Since ChatGPT leans heavily on Bing’s index, it is a solid window into your AI presence.

Every one of these shows a slice. The checker above is the only one that runs ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity at once and shows you the actual competitors getting recommended instead of you. That is the whole board in one click.

How To Use The GoBIG AI Visibility Checker

To use the AI visibility checker, enter your info and let it run. It takes about a minute:

  1. Type in your business name.
  2. Add your website.
  3. Enter your service and your city.
  4. Hit “Check My AI Visibility.”

We run the questions your customers actually ask AI, then show you which businesses it recommends back. If you’re not on that list, your competitor is getting that call.

How Does the AI Visibility Checker Work?

Our AI visibility checker runs real searches across AI platforms and shows you exactly which businesses are showing up instead of yours. Enter your business name, website, service type, and city. We handle the rest.

The tool searches the queries your customers are actually typing into ChatGPT. Things like “best roofer in Tulsa” or “top dentist near me.” Then it pulls back the results and shows you who AI is recommending. Not a guess. Not a score based on some algorithm. Actual names of actual competitors that are showing up where you’re not.

Here’s why that matters. When someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, they’ve usually already made their decision before they even click on a website. It’s not like Google where people open five tabs and compare. AI weighs the options for them. It gives pros and cons. By the time they reach out, they’ve already chosen. If that choice isn’t your business, you never even had a shot.

Only 1.2% of local businesses are currently being recommended by ChatGPT. This tool shows you whether you’re in that 1.2% or if your competitors are eating your lunch.

Free ChatGPT Visibility Checker

This works as a free ChatGPT visibility checker too. When someone asks ChatGPT “who’s the best roofer in Tulsa,” it doesn’t hand them ten links to dig through. It picks a couple of businesses and gives that person an answer. Our tool runs those same questions and shows you whether ChatGPT named you or sent the lead to your competitor.

ChatGPT already recommends businesses in your industry every single day. If it’s not saying your name, someone else is getting that call. Run the check above and see where you actually stand.

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Businesses to Recommend?

ChatGPT recommends businesses based on how much trustworthy information it can find about them online. It pulls from your Google Business Profile, review sites, directories, your website content, and third party mentions across the web.

The biggest factor? Consistency. If your business name, address, phone number, services, and messaging all match across every platform, AI sees you as legit. If your info is scattered or outdated, it skips you.

Here’s what surprised us working with 130+ local businesses. The companies ChatGPT recommends aren’t always the ones you’d expect. Traditional rankings still matter, but AI can be influenced fast. We added case studies showing we ranked clients #1 within 30 days, and ChatGPT started calling us the “fastest SEO agency in Broken Arrow” almost overnight. One blog post or one PR mention can change AI’s answer within 12 hours.

That means the businesses showing up ahead of you right now might not even be better than you. They just gave AI more to work with. More reviews. More content. More mentions. More reasons to trust them over you.

Your Google Business Profile matters more now than ever. You can’t fake a GBP. Google verifies it. AI knows that, which is why it leans on it heavily when deciding who to recommend. If your profile is incomplete or stale, you’re handing that visibility to your competitors.

Does ChatGPT Pull From Google or Bing?

Both. ChatGPT pulls from Bing search results, your Google Business Profile, review platforms, directories, and content across the web. It doesn’t use just one source. It looks at everything it can find and pieces together which businesses seem the most credible.

A lot of business owners forget about Bing entirely. But ChatGPT runs Bing searches behind the scenes when someone asks for a local recommendation. If you’ve never claimed your Bing Places profile, that’s a gap. It takes five minutes to set up and it directly affects whether ChatGPT can find you.

Google still plays a huge role though. Your GBP, your reviews, your website rankings. AI tools pull from those signals because they’re hard to fake. A verified Google Business Profile with real reviews and accurate info carries serious weight with AI. That’s why we tell every client the same thing. GBP is more important in 2026 than it’s ever been. Not less.

The bottom line is AI doesn’t care where the information comes from. It cares whether the information is consistent, trustworthy, and detailed. If your business shows up the same way across Google, Bing, Yelp, industry directories, and your own website, AI has no reason to skip you. If your info is missing or conflicting on any of those platforms, AI picks someone else.

How Many People Use ChatGPT Instead of Google?

810 million people use ChatGPT every single day. Google AI Overviews reach 1.5 billion monthly users. This isn’t a trend. It’s already how people search.

One study found that ChatGPT is 88% more likely than Google to be used for informational searches. That means when someone wants to know who the best plumber in their city is, they’re asking ChatGPT before they ever open Google. And the way they search is completely different. They’re not typing “plumber Tulsa” and scrolling through ten blue links. They’re asking “who is the best plumber near me and why” and getting one direct answer.

That’s the shift. Google gives you options. AI gives you a decision. By the time someone clicks through to your website from a ChatGPT recommendation, they’ve basically already chosen you. Our clients are seeing it firsthand. Over the past year, more and more of their customers are saying they found them through ChatGPT. And those leads tend to be higher quality because AI already did the comparison shopping for them.

Here’s the scariest part. 93% of AI search sessions end without a single website click. That means if AI doesn’t mention your business in its answer, you don’t just lose the click. You never existed in that person’s search at all.

How Do I Get ChatGPT to Recommend My Business?

Do regular SEO really well and bake in small AI strategies on top of it. That’s it. You don’t need a completely different playbook. The fundamentals still matter more than anything.

A lot of business owners hear “AEO” or “AI SEO” and think they need to start from scratch with some brand new strategy. They don’t. The businesses ChatGPT recommends are the same ones doing the basics right. Complete Google Business Profile. Consistent citations. Real reviews. Quality content on their website. A strong local presence in every market you serve, the same Tulsa SEO foundation we build for clients across the country.

Where AI gets interesting is how fast you can influence it. Traditional SEO can take months to move the needle. With AI, something as small as a single blog post or a press release can change what ChatGPT recommends within 12 hours. That’s not an exaggeration. We’ve seen it happen with our own clients.

Here’s what actually moves the needle for AI visibility:

  • Keep your GBP fully updated with accurate services, hours, and photos
  • Get real reviews consistently. AI reads them.
  • Publish helpful content that answers questions the way people actually ask them
  • Get mentioned on third party sites. Directories, news sites, industry blogs.
  • Make sure your business info matches everywhere. Name, address, phone, services.

The biggest mistake we see is business owners overthinking this. They want the fancy AI strategy when their Google Business Profile hasn’t been updated in two years. Fix the foundation first. Then layer in the AI stuff.

What Is the Difference Between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO gets you found on Google. AEO gets you featured in AI answers. GEO gets you recognized as a unique authority that AI trusts above everyone else. They’re not three separate strategies. They’re layers that build on each other.

SEO is the foundation. Keyword optimization, technical site health, backlinks, local citations, Google Business Profile. Everything you already know. This still drives the majority of your visibility online and it’s not going anywhere.

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. Think about how you use ChatGPT. You ask a question, it gives you a straight answer. AEO is about structuring your content to be that answer. FAQ sections, clear service descriptions, direct responses to the questions your customers actually ask. If your website reads like a sales pitch instead of a helpful resource, AI skips right over you.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. This is where originality matters. AI is scanning millions of pages looking for content worth recommending. If your website sounds like everyone else in your industry, you blend in. GEO is about standing out with real experience, real case studies, real opinions that only your business can offer. The more original your content is, the more likely AI is to pull from it.

Here’s how we explain it to clients. SEO gets you in the game. AEO makes sure AI can understand what you do. GEO makes sure AI chooses you over the other guy. You need all three, but you start with SEO. Always.

Does My Google Business Profile Affect AI Visibility?

Yes. Your Google Business Profile is one of the most important factors in whether AI recommends your business. It might be the single most important one.

AI tools trust GBP because you can’t fake it. Google verifies your business. They verify your address. They verify your phone number. That level of authentication makes your GBP one of the most reliable data sources AI can pull from. Reviews on your GBP carry extra weight for the same reason. Real customers, real names, real feedback that AI can analyze and use to decide whether you’re worth recommending.

We’ve been doing this for over 130 local businesses and the pattern is clear. The clients with fully built out Google Business Profiles show up in AI results more often. The ones with incomplete profiles, old photos, missing service categories, or zero reviews in the last six months get skipped.

Here’s what a strong GBP looks like in 2026:

  • Every service you offer listed individually
  • Updated business hours including holiday hours
  • Fresh photos added regularly
  • Consistent new reviews with real responses from you
  • Accurate service area
  • Products or services section filled out
  • Business description that clearly explains what you do and where

If your GBP hasn’t been touched in a while, that’s the first thing to fix before worrying about any AI strategy. AI can only recommend what it can verify. Give it something to work with.

AI Search vs Google Search: What's the Difference?

Google gives you a list of options. AI gives you a decision. That’s the simplest way to understand the difference.

When you search on Google, you type something like “best HVAC company in Tulsa.” You get ten blue links, a map pack, maybe some ads. Then you open three or four tabs, compare websites, read reviews, and eventually pick someone. The whole process takes 15 to 20 minutes.

When you ask ChatGPT the same question, it does all of that for you. It weighs the options, compares the pros and cons, and gives you a direct recommendation. By the time you click through to that business’s website, you’ve already pretty much decided. That’s why leads from AI tend to be higher quality. The comparison shopping already happened before they ever reached out.

For business owners, this changes everything. On Google, you had ten chances to get noticed. On AI, you might get one. If you’re not in that answer, you’re not a runner up. You don’t exist in that search.

The good news is the factors that help you rank in both are mostly the same. Strong website content. Real reviews. Consistent business info across the web. Quality backlinks. The difference is AI cares less about keyword tricks and more about trust signals. It’s looking for the business it can confidently recommend, not the one that stuffed the right words into a title tag.

Google isn’t going anywhere. But how people use it is changing fast. AI Overviews already reach 1.5 billion monthly users. The search box is becoming a conversation. And the businesses that show up in that conversation are the ones that win.

What Do My AI Visibility Results Mean?

If you’re showing up for 0 out of 5 queries, every potential customer asking AI for your service is being sent to your competitors. That’s not a maybe. That’s happening right now.

The results show you exactly which businesses AI is recommending for the searches your customers are making. You’ll see the top competitors listed by name for each query. If your business isn’t in that list, those are real leads walking through someone else’s door because AI never mentioned you.

Most business owners who run this tool have the same reaction. Confusion first, then frustration. “How did THAT company show up ahead of me?” It happens more than you’d think. The businesses AI recommends aren’t always the biggest or the best. They’re the ones that gave AI the most to work with. More content, more reviews, more mentions, more consistent info across the web.

Here’s how to read your results:

  • Found in 4-5 queries: You’re in great shape. AI knows who you are and trusts you enough to recommend you. Keep doing what you’re doing.
  • Found in 2-3 queries: You’re on the radar but inconsistent. There are gaps in your online presence that are costing you visibility on certain searches.
  • Found in 0-1 queries: AI is sending almost all of your potential customers to your competitors. Your online presence needs work.

The good news is AI visibility can change fast. The bad news is your competitors are figuring this out too. The longer you wait, the harder it gets to catch up.

If your results aren’t where you want them, we can help. Book a free roadmap call and we’ll show you exactly what needs to happen to get AI recommending your business.
